Andretti Autosport's long awaited Formula One pursuit is coming closer to fruition. Now, it includes the help of an American automotive icon.

General Motors brand Cadillac will team up with Andretti and apply for a Formula One team after the FIA opens the formal process in the coming months, the team announced in a press release Thursday.

Andretti Autosport, which announced a new multi-million dollar global headquarters in the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers, Indiana, last year, plans to run the team from the Hoosier State with a support base in the UK.

“We are continuing to grow Andretti Global and its family of racing teams and always have our eyes on what’s next," Andretti CEO and chairman Michael Andretti said in the press release. "I’m proud to have GM and Cadillac alongside us as we pursue this goal. GM and Andretti share a legacy born out of the love of racing. We now have the opportunity to combine our motorsport passions and dedication to innovation to build a true American F1 bid."

Andretti and General Motors previously teamed up in IndyCar, with the team running Chevrolet engines from 2012-13. It scored nine wins and a driver, team and manufacturers championship in that time.

Andretti continues to promise at least one American driver on its F1 team. The last U.S. driver to compete in F1 was Indy 500 champion Alexander Rossi for the ill-fated Manor F1 team in 2015. American driver Logan Sargeant will drive for the Williams F1 team this season.

Cadillac re-entered top tier motorsports in 2017 with the Cadillac DPi prototype in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, and debuted a new LMDH prototype car for use in IMSA and the World Endurance Championship this season.

Mark Reuss, president of General Motors, said the brand was proud to support the American F1 effort and excited to bring Cadillac to Formula One.

Andretti Cadillac would be the second American team on the grid, alongside the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team based in Kannapolis, North Carolina.
